Inspiration, Motivation, Leadership and Teamwork
Matt Stevens has led a unique career with over 40-years of service as an Infantry Soldier and Officer, commanding at every tactical level within Australia’s Special Forces; SAS Patrol Commander through to Special Operations Task Group Commander. He has served in Bougainville, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan on multiple tours. In addition, he has extensive experience in managing people and implementing organisational change and reform. He has commanded, led, managed and trained high-performance teams over a lifetime of service in the Australian Army, including the building of new teams and capabilities in the most demanding and challenging of circumstances. Matt can relate to all levels given his background as both a soldier and officer, tailoring to the needs of the audience and brings a unique wealth of knowledge, perspective and energy to an event, relating best practice concepts of leadership, team building, resilience and problem solving to actual real-time events and experiences.
Matt’s outstanding leadership performance has been recognised through him being awarded a Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) for command and leadership in action in Iraq, a Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC) for his role in developing the Australian East Coast Counter-Terrorism capability and the Commendation for Distinguished Service for his leadership in action as an SAS Squadron Commander in Afghanistan. He has also been awarded the US Bronze Star for command and leadership in action during the Battles of Mosul and Tal Afar in 2017.
In addition to Matt’s operational leadership experience, he has also been responsible for the planning, management, coordination and oversight of 85% of the Australian Army’s people capability, through his role as Director Personnel within Headquarters Forces Command. In this capacity, he mobilised the largest call-out of Army Reservists for the 2019 Bushfire Emergency, as well as the Army’s COVID-19 response. He continues to serve as a high performance coach and mentor for senior leaders across Defence.
Within the corporate sector, Matt has significant experience providing leadership, resilience and crisis management development training for a range of clients across a wide variety of sectors, ranging from construction and industrials through to professional sporting teams. He also is a performance coach for a range of corporate clients.
Excellent communication has been hallmark of Matt’s career in the operational military sphere, command appointments and his roles in the corporate sector. Matt delivers his key messages in plain English that ensures the best results. He is eloquent, forthright and inspiring. Matt has lived through real crisis and delivered resiliency when actual lives are at risk.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Professional Studies (HR) from the University of New England and a Master of Arts – Strategy and Management from the University of New South Wales. He is also a graduate of the AICD Company Directors Course, Graduate of the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership (IECL), graduate of the National Security College, at the Australian National University and the United States Special Operations University.
